May 5, 2023, marked the beginning of a disaster that will not soon be forgotten. Unprecedented wildfires, fuelled by extremely dry conditions and high wind speeds, ignited across our borders, threatening towns and communities throughout Greenview.

The communities of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, Valleyview, Little Smoky, Fox Creek, Grovedale, and Sweathouse faced significant risks as multiple large uncontrolled wildfires spread rapidly.

At the onset, the wildfires quickly outgrew the workforce and resources available to Alberta Forestry, challenging Alberta Wildfire’s capability to engage all the wildfires across the province. However, through collective effort and support, Greenview's Emergency Operations Centre assisted in the response for all levels of the incident with the help of partners such as Alberta Wildfire, Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, RCMP, and Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA).

Join us in the #GreenviewGivesThanks campaign as we honour and appreciate the brave wildfire responders in Greenview during the wildfires. Let's recognize their dedication, courage, and selflessness in protecting our communities and natural surroundings from the devastating flames. Please share your stories, express your gratitude, and spread awareness about their incredible work. Together, we can ignite a wave of appreciation for these true heroes. 🚒🔥💚

I would like to say thank you to everyone that had helped and did their part in fighting the GWF0-17 fire that had went through sturgeon lake reserve. Being one of the sturgeon lake firefighters we were there since the very beginning. From the first day of having been surrounded by and driving through the fire and heat smoke and embers fighting it back behind homes, buildings within the first hours, using the water as a shield to be able to walk out of the flames to continue fighting for our land and homes. Having to stay behind without shelter... Continue reading

The firefighters will probably never meet all the people whose property they saved. To us, it's much more than not losing possessions. It's knowing that groups of people are very good at their jobs, and worked unbelievably hard to help strangers.

The nightly updates from the Emergency Operations Centre were so informative and reassuring. It was a relief to know up to date information and to realize how many agencies were sharing resources. Our family members in other parts of Albert and Canada also appreciated having access to this timely information.

As a community we are truly grateful to all the crews that came to our area to fight the out of control wildfire. We were so blessed to be able to serve them some meals and engage in conversations with them, they became like family to us and our hearts were warmed. We thank you all for being here for our community, you all are our heroes ,we will forever be grateful!! You left your homes, your families and some even left your countries to be here for us, we cannot thank you enough!!

As a resident of the Town of Valleyview, I want to commend the extraordinary work of the RCMP, especially the Valleyview detachment. Our local Detachment Commander and Officers, joined by numerous members of other detachments went door to door following the mandatory evacuation issued by the Town. They were caring and compassionate when informing residents of the danger and were not judgemental in any way. We would like to give them a BIG shout out for keeping a careful and consistent watch on our homes and businesses while we were away also! We are so grateful to all of those... Continue reading
